Missouri governor lets abortion law take effect
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has allowed new requirements for that state’s abortion clinics to become law without his signature on the bill.
The governor’s office announced Nixon’s decision Wednesday — the deadline to sign or veto bills. If not signed by the governor, Missouri bills automatically become law.
The legislation will expand Missouri’s 24-hour abortion consent law by requiring clinics to give women the chance to view an ultrasound image and listen to the heartbeat of the fetus.
It also requires a consultation to occur in person instead of over the phone, and mandates that women receive a description of the physical characteristics of the fetus.
The new law is to take effect Aug. 28.What POSSIBLE medical reason has he given for signing this into law? It’s trying to guilt women into not getting an abortion. It’s not like, “Oh hey, we weren’t sure ladiezzz know what they’re carrying when they say they’re pregnant, so this is good medical advice.”
What a chicken-shit governor. Not signing or vetoing the law. Takes a lot of courage to make those kind of decisions.
Reason #247 why I have disowned my state of birth.
They kind of laws are always pushed for by anti-women’s rights groups (prochoice/prolife are both fail names, let’s cut to the chase; either you think a woman can make a choice about her own body or you don’t. Choice/Life is over, just say that you either favor women’s right to self-determination or not. But I digress.)
Anyway, these type of laws are pushed for with the thought that it will scare women from abortions or slow the process of getting one, in the second regard these laws can be considered ‘successful’ but studies have shown that in many cases, showing a woman considering an abortion that her fetus is smaller than a thumb or still has a tail can have the effect of assuring her that an abortion is an option she wants to pursue because let’s face it; IT HAS A TAIL!
